Water leaks in the basement: how to get your basement dry again quickly and easily

Water in the cellar - an emergency case

It was a big shock: a few weeks ago, the heating rods in the hot water boiler in our cellar burnt out. The increased pressure caused the pressure relief valve to open and a large amount of water escaped and spread throughout the basement. The water even made its way through the door of the boiler room to the basement hallway. We were actually standing about 10 cm ankle-high in water!

Immediate measures

Once we had turned off the water supply, the water had to be removed from the basement floor as quickly as possible to prevent further moisture damage.

Our solution: water protection cushions

Fortunately, we had a supply of portable water protection cushions stored at home for emergencies. These cushions are ideal for absorbing liquids and forming flow barriers for water.

We laid out about 50 of them on the basement floor. Each pillow (60 x 50cm) can absorb up to 20 liters of liquid and weighs only 300g, which makes spreading easy.

During the soaking process, we repeatedly loosened the cushions so that the powder they contained was evenly distributed for water absorption. The cushions filled up quickly and absorbed the leaked water.

After just one hour, all the water was absorbed - no puddles remained and there was no need to wipe up! No cost-intensive pumping out or tedious mopping up with a mop - we saved a lot of time and energy.

Drying after absorbing the water

Once the cushions had absorbed all the water, we laid them outside in the sun and on uneven ground to dry, in our case a gravel bed. The air circulation from below also accelerates the drying process. After a few days, the cushions were dry and flat again. Now they are waiting for their next use, which hopefully won't be so soon.
